本書改編自真實事件，結合電影劇本與漫畫的新穎手法，在輕鬆諷刺的筆調之中，演繹出苦樂交織的生命嘉年華。
 
十四歲的故事主角Donald Delpe，總有滿懷的青春期憤怒無處發洩，無時無刻不對性愛、音樂、毒品感到好奇，然而，在他看似精力旺盛的生命下，實則卻是一副飽受血癌病魔糾纏的身體。表面看似什麼都不在乎的Donald，透過漫畫塑造了一個全是超級英雄的王國，裡面充斥著無情的壞蛋與瘋狂的性愛，唯獨沒有病痛。難解的青少年，再加上青少年創造出的難解國度，這對關心Donald的父母來說，根本無法插手融入，在心力交瘁、束手無策之下，只有請來大名鼎鼎的權威心理醫師– Dr. King。Dr. King將如何解讀Donald的超級英雄漫畫世界？他真的幫得上Donald的忙嗎？還是Donald會反過來拉心理醫生一把，讓他重新認識豁然開朗的生命意涵呢？
 

閱讀本書如同觀看一場精采的戲中戲，原本看似老套的劇情中，頻頻出現驚喜轉折，並不時穿插無厘頭的漫畫效果，讀來節奏明快，在幽默戲謔的主線之上，不安的青春與禁錮的人生，一一出場。
 
作者Anthony McCarten，1961年生，紐西蘭小說家、劇作家、導演。2000年出版的首部小說《紡織工》（Spinners），被譯為六國語言，並被Esquire雜誌選為當年英國十大年度小說。2005年的第二部作品《波斯情迷》（The English Harems）被改編為電視劇，旅英中國小說家毛翔青（Timothy Mo）也推崇《波斯情迷》為當年他最喜歡的年度小說。2006年出版的《超級英雄之死》（Death of A Superhero）是他的第三部小說，第四本小說《雙手演藝》（Show of Hands）將在今年(2008年)出版。
