殖民防衛軍為了擴張人類的殖民生活領域，往往不擇手段，幽靈戰旅只是其中一種。在戰火連綿的星際世界中，爾虞我詐的行徑比比皆是，敵對一方亦想盡辦法企圖洞燭機先。原本一位為殖民防衛軍研發機密科技的科學家布東（Charles Boutin），神秘失蹤，可能叛逃敵方。殖民防衛軍為了查出他的下落，獲悉他所掌握的科技機密，便取得布東的基因，利用製造幽靈戰旅的科技，複製出一名戰士迪拉克（Jared Dirac）。《暮年戰士》中的主角約翰‧派瑞和這支特種打擊部隊的一名中尉美女珍‧莎岡（Jane Sagan），會同迪拉克，一起前去追捕叛徒布東。這個任務隨著布東根植在迪拉克心中的意識復活，而變得複雜，危機重重。《幽靈戰旅》仍延續前一本書中的星戰場面，並加上諜對諜般的驚悚鬥智橋段，全書從頭到尾，毫無冷場。
